Do you know what is Favicon is? Wikipedia says
A favicon (Short for Favorite icon), also known as a shortcut icon, Web site icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon, is a file containing one or more small icons, most commonly 16×16 pixels, associated with a particular Web site or Web page.
Yes, Favicon is an of the identification of a website. If you bookmark a site, its icon is actually the favicon of the website. Although having a Favicon is not that important, I personally find Favicon a very attractive feature to have in a website. Did you know what the Favicon of Google is? I know, anyone knows that, it is the following.
But can you see that now? If yes, please clear your browser cache and reload Google. You will see a new Favicon of Google.

Yes, Google has changed the look of the Favicon to a light blue theme. But was it necessary and more importantly do you like it? I, personally am not liking it. Google is known for its colorfulness and the old Favicon was perfect to show that theme. But probably, Google wants to show a new refreshed look along with loads of new features that are being unrevealed everyday. Anyway, the old favicon lasted about 3 years. So, lets welcome the youth !! ;-)
