Add or Change File Extensions in Batch using Portable Batch File Extension Renamer

Protected by Copyscape Web Copyright Checker
A filename extension is a suffix (separated from the base filename by a dot) to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the encoding (file format) of its contents or usage. A software that is able to open a file recognizes that file with its extension. Often I write FORTRAN programs for my project in a text file and to run that I need to change the extension from .txt to .f. In my institute data file output from Laser Flash Photolysis setup has no extension, while our plotting software supports .txt and .dat files only. While manually renaming filename extension is not a hard task, it is laborious enough if the number of files are large. In such cases portable software like Batch File Extension Renamer comes handy. According to the developer
As a PHP developer I often find myself presented with a website where all the files are with a .html extension and I either have to manually rename all of the files or mess around with a shell. This tiny but powerful app takes away all that hassle.
Features & Specifications
  • The software runs on any version of Linux, OSX and Windows.
  • The Windows version requires no installation. You need to extract the archive. Execute the executable file and the GUI will open.
  • The GUI is straight forward, not resizable. Usage is easy too and no help file is available.
  1. Select input and output directory. You may also replace the existing ones.
  2. If you want to change one file extension to another, type the previous one in the first box as [*.txt] and the desired one in the next box [*.dat].
  3. If you want to add an extension follow the same procedure, just leave the first box blank.
  4. To start conversion click on Go.
  • The conversion is very fast and accurate and the system resource usage is small.
My Verdict
I find this software inevitable for my work. If you are in similar need, go and grab it now. Common filename renamers are also capable of renaming filename extensions but for that you will need to adjust the parameters, which is somewhat tough for common users. I will highly recommend this software.
In the latest version the developer has added an option to rename files with any extension to a particular extension & an auto update checking option. I appreciate the developer for such quick response to user needs.

  1. would be better if it would allow you to use *.* are original starting point and rename to say *.dat, etc.

  2. This for renaming any extensions? A good idea indeed. Lets hope the developer sees this.

  3. Are you saying renaming files of any extension to a specified extension? I quite like that idea, I think I'll add it in a future release.

Incidently Sujay, it might be better if you link the main download page (http://code.google.com/p/batch-file-extension-renamer/downloads/list) as your links are already out of date ;) (0.2.2 is the latest for all OS)
