YouTube is probably the most popular online video sharing sites and it's always good to download your favorite videos from Youtube for offline use. Unfortunately Youtube do not provide any official way to download videos from their site but its easy and legal to download videos from Youtube using tools like Movie Saver NoVirusThanks Youtube Downloader etc. Rylstim Youtube Downloader is a similar tool and unlike the two aforementioned tools it supports only YouTube.
Features and Specifications
The software installer is only 3,837 Kb in size and is not digitally signed. But the software is safe and have no malware incorporated in it. Installation is smooth and fast during which Desktop and Quick Launch icons are created as default options. Installation requires 4.2 Mb of disk space.
Upon launching the software, you will get to see a no-clutter GUI.
Main GUI
The software has two tabs. 'Other Request' tab shows the latest downloaded YouTube videos by Rylstim Youtube Downloader users. The main tab has Options button where you will be able to change the default position where the downloaded video will be saved.
Change the default Output directory
To download any YouTube, you need to paste the Video URL in the GUI. and click on 'Get' and you will be able to see all the video types that are downloadable.
Downloadable Video Types
Choose you desired format and click on 'Download' and the video download will be initiated very soon.
Download Progress
After completion of download it will open the downloaded video with the default media player. The software supports unicode file names and can download large video files.
For a complete demonstration on this software please see the video demonstration.
My Verdict
I liked the straight forwardness of the software very much. One thing I disliked in this software is that it keeps video fragments even if user a cancels a download. It should either ask the user about it or delete it automatically because most of the time user remains unaware of it and incomplete downloads consume much important disk space constantly. Moreover the software consumes moderate resources during download.
System Impact
So there is a scope for fine tuning the software.
The software page has very limited information. There is no System Requirements mentioned in that page. But this software ran well in Windows XP (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit).
There is also no help documentation, nether offline nor online. But that is OK since the usage of the software is extremely easy.
I wish they could make a portable version available.

  1. Always good to get a recommendation for downloading from youtube - there's a lot of poor and/or dodgy stuff out there. On firefox I've been using a plugin from www.clipconverter.cc (you can also simply use it online).
Works well for me (not a big user though), has trouble with unicode file names (you can manually fill them in when saving the file though). With saving as/converting to MP3, you can set a time for start and end of track (as opposed to getting the whole thing) - I presume you can do this as well with video but havent tried it.

  2. Thanks Tom I was not aware of this tool. I personally use NetVideoHunter for Firefox. But that allows to download as FLV only. For all other formats I used Easy YouTube Video Downloader.
